A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
