Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
