Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
