Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
