The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
